WHAT IS PHYSICAL MEDICINE?

Physical Medicine is that form of medicine that uses anything physical to treat a condition. For example, the use of heat, cold, soundwaves, electricity, are considered physical medicine, while even treatments like manipulation (spinal), massage, therapeutic exercises, and muscle energy stretching are also within the definition.

What is the education of a Physical Medicine expert?

Experts in physical medicine are physicians, board certified in it, are licensed to diagnose, and have experience in treating injuries & pain- both acute & chronic.

What conditions can be helped by Physical Medicine?

Most conditions that have a pain component are well treated by Physical Medicine. Examples include shoulder, knee & other joint injuries; back pain or neck pain; arthritis, bursitis, and tendinitis; muscle sprains and strains; headaches, and other pain syndromes. Other conditions, like poor immune function, menstrual cramps, PMS, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue can also improve with Physical Medicine.

Do others provide Physical Medicine?

Some components of Physical Medicine can be provided by non-physicians. However, they should always be performed under the guidance of a physician.

Is Physical Medicine the same as Physical Therapy?

Physical Medicine includes all aspects of Physical Therapy, and more. Physical Therapists work with & under the guidance, and supervision of Physicians specializing in Physical Medicine.
